How To Identify Your Personal Style

What is a personal style? I think Rachel Zoe sums it up really brilliantly in one sentence.

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

There is a misconception that personal styling is only for people who are extremely fashion conscious and celebrity. The reality is, it affects everyone. We wear clothes every day! Personal style is so important because it represents who you are. It takes only 7 seconds for someone to form their first impression on you. Your personal style is, in fact, your personal brand.

So… How do you identify your personal style that truly represents who you are? I have listed some tips below to help you get started:-

  • Who are you?

The first step will be to take a bit of time to learn about yourself. What’s your personality? How do you want to be perceived? What does your friends/ colleague say about you? Is this true reflection of who you are?

You might make some interesting discoveries when doing this simple exercise of self-discovery. Remember to be nice and don’t be too critical of yourself.

  • Get some inspirations

Once you have a clear understanding of who you are and how you want to be perceived, then, its time to get some inspirations from other sources like movies, fashion week, magazine, friends and street style. From here, you can start mapping your style. Make sure that you are not following the current trend blindly! Remember, it’s your PERSONAL style. NOT everyone else’s style. Don’t fall into this trap!

Pinterest is a good platform that you can use to map out your own personal style. You can create a mood board with fashion pieces that you like and then work on creating your personal style from there.

  • Be realistic.

Be real and be realistic. Think about your lifestyle. Be honest about what your lifestyle is and what works for you. Do not fall into the fast fashion trap that we have to own everything that we like or everything that is in trend. Ask yourself questions rather than making impulse purchases. Is this suitable for my lifestyle? Will this piece of clothing match my personal style? Will I wear this piece for more than one time? Does it compliment my wardrobe? The key is to slow down. Think before you buy.

  • Be creative and fun

Be creative. Compliment your outfits or styles with accessories that make you stand out. Experiment. Mix and match pieces to come up with outfits that make you feel good and confident about yourself as well as suitable for your lifestyle.

  • Be confident and smile

Now that you have your personal style and created a wardrobe that matches your lifestyle and personality. Be confident in your choices. Be happy that you have your personal style that truly represents who you are.

Don’t forget to keep smiling. When you see yourself in the mirror in the morning, give yourself a big smile. When we smile, we feel good from within. Bring the good feeling and the smile with you throughout the day.

  • Hire a personal stylist

The simplest and most time efficient way will be to hire a personal stylist. Hiring a personal stylist might seem expensive at the first glance but you will actually save money. A good personal stylist will be able to advise and educate you on clothes that suit your body type and color. It is also very important to find a personal stylist who can accurately create your personal style that truly represents who you are.
